Let’s talk about the abortion pill…

Using the abortion pill is also known as medical or chemical abortion.

But the name ‘abortion pill’ is inaccurate. It’s really 2 pills that must be taken in order to cause an abortion. The first is mifepristone, brand name Mifeprex. It blocks progesterone which is a hormone that is critical to the development of a pregnancy. This ends the ongoing progression of the pregnancy. The pill is dispensed by an abortion provider and usually taken at the clinic. It is effective in terminating a pregnancy within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

It’s important to know that you are within the first 10 weeks of your pregnancy. An ultrasound at Your Choices can determine that. Ultrasounds are offered at no cost to you and provide the confirmation you need about gestational age.

The second pill is misoprostol, which is taken 24-48 hours after the first pill.  It works to empty the uterus by causing cramping and bleeding, very much like a miscarriage. It is recommended that you have someone at home with you in case you experience any serious bleeding issues.

Some women change their minds between taking the first and the second pill. If that happens to you, the abortion can be reversed 64-68% of the time if done quickly. To learn more about that process, contact 877-558-0333.

In the surrounding areas of Randolph County, the cost for the abortion pill is $350-650. But are there other costs of an abortion, or the abortion pill?

Our upcoming blogs will discuss additional details about the costs associated with abortion.
